UNC is an extremely reputable school, but Berkeley has a prestige that it can't match. I'm a Berkeley alumnus, and while I don't think the nightlife is superb in Berkeley as far as clubs, but there are lots of cool bars. The East Bay is sort of laid-back urban. San Fran is a 15 minute BART ride away for clubbing. I've been to UNC, and that area is much smaller, like a tiny Georgetown. There will be lots more to do in Berkeley, you'll get the better education, and you'll avoid NC winters (my brother complains about them all the time, as he lives an hour from there). Just be prepared for the crazy Berkeley politics (which add a humorous twist on the experience).

Visit Chapel Hill and Berkeley before, dont base your decision strictly on "prestige". Since your from SoCal, I'd guess Cal might be more attractive money wise, but I believe UNC is one of the most reasonable priced out of state schools. I have a couple friends that went out there, and they enjoyed the town and the preppy/sport culture out there. Berkeley annoys me at times, and I prefer to go out to the city (SF), but that might be just from being here a while. Cal day was yesterday, (which is like new admit day), but if you haven't been up here before, drive up next weekend and stop by some the places near campus, good way to get the vibe of the area.

Hi all Cal alumni! - another here! I would say, Berkeley, hands down, or hands up, or feet up! hehe. Attending this school was a truly transformative experience. Every 18 year old should try it.
