Fremont is south of Oakland and is working class/middle class. It'll be a shock for home/rent costs. You can commute a bit, but its over mountains. It would be a great adventure for you if you can figure out how to afford it.

Fremont is fine. There is no "there" there, but Niles actually feels like a village with a downtown. Tons to see and do in the Bay Area. For me, this wouldn't be a choice. Come out this way.

What up Chuck! I just love Peppermint Patty.

Hey post in the San Francisco sub forum. See if NewtoCA moderator will move it for you. I'll just send a request for you.

OK big things going on here. DO YOU HAVE KIDS?

Next I would rent for at least six months in the Pleaston/Livermore/Castro Valley area and pop over the Sunol Grade to work. 680 fwy. Tesla is with in commute distance of about 10 different cities all in the East/South Bay. That's a big area you will need lots of time to find the right place to buy. Plus you will need to get over the sticker shock.

Lots of people will disagree with me but thats better for you to make a decision.

Fremont is not necessarily working class/middle class only. Over towards the hills, specifically the Mission San Jose area, it's fairly upscale. If you want to avoid going over the hill, you might want to try that area but it's pretty pricey. Also, it's also predominately Asian (high education/high income, mostly Chinese and Indian families) who come here for the schools.

But yes, it will be a shocker for housing costs in any case.

I'm assuming your Tesla location is in the former NUMMI (GM-Toyota joint venture, dissolved when GM got into Chapter 11 and walked out of it and Toyota didn't have the demand to keep it going) in Fremont. Tesla's HQ and other offices (specifically design, engineering, etc.) is in Palo Alto.

Fremont would be the best place to live for a short commute. It is a pleasant suburb type community with convenient shopping and restaurants. If you like very hot weather and want a heavy traffic commute on the 680 freeway go for Pleasanton.

Kia vs. Tesla is a difficult choice if that is the location in rural West Point. If it was suburban Atlanta it would be an easy choice. If you do not mind living in a rural/small town area the Georgia location offers incredible cost of living advantages.

Compare:

I love the Bay, but it is no contest. If you have kids or want a big house stay in GA. If you don't mind a high coast of living and access to a vibrant urban area, try the Bay Area. But honestly, the going rate for a house somewhere in a reasonable commute to a job center is $500K (more if you need access to the middle of Silicon Valley. Add more if you want a good school district. As the price lowers you'll trade neighborhood safety, school district or commute time. Likely all 3.

I left CA two years ago and now thinking about moving back. If you live in the Bay area and enjoy it, it will be very had to leave it. You should use one of these compare tools on the Internet and put the two cities in there and see how they compare when it comes to weather, cost of living, education, etc. I lived in Walnut Creek and Danville and worked in Pleasanton and Concord. The whole bay area is a commuter area, everyone commute to some place, rarely when you find someone living in the same town they work in. In my day people tended to change jobs frequently but wanted to stay put when it comes to homes and schools. If you have kids, schools are one of the things that you will need to think about. If you guys are young and ready for adventure, move to CA and enjoy it.
