anyone out there commute from Lafayette or Walnut creek area down to Silicon valley?

we're looking to move from SF to the east bay and every comment on the Oakland - silicon valley commute has indicated we should avoid 880 at all costs...moving further east makes the 680 more of a reality

anyone out there commute down 680 to the Sunnyvale area?
what are the commute times like during peak hours (8am, 5pm)?

680 isn't any better. It's only three lanes through the worst bottlenecked section, which is the approach to the Sunol Grade, which results in monstrous backups on a daily basis which start early and linger extremely late, well after other commutes have recovered.

The commute is just a part of living in the East Bay. Either you accept the compromise to get the lower cost of living and higher overall quality of life, or you don't.

Move closer to Silicon Valley, Lafayette is expensive too. If you mainly want to be close to SF, maybe live in Fremont which is about 45 minutes away on BART from SF.

Totally agree with this. Plus, you're going to need to get over from 680 to Sunnyvale. My guess is that 237 would be the best way to go, but you're going to have to deal with crazy traffic all the way from 680 until you get west of Great America.

680 is horrendous. From Walnut Creek all the way to Fremont it can be hellacious.

Another alternativer could be to leave Oakland at 5am and you should get down there in under 1 hour.

Wow you could stay on 680 and cut across to 237. Dublin/Pleasanton would work ok. About halfway between the two. All the freeways here suck. No matter what. I've done Hayward to Emeryville at 1pm on a Tuesday-it sucked. I've done San Jose to Livermore at 11am midweek- it sucked. It literally can happen anywhere. Live somewhere between and you'll be fine.

Aint that the truth.

I was stuck in a horrendous traffic jam on 880 a few days ago at 12:30PM around Oakland airport for no reason at all-no accident, nothing.

These jams seem to pop up randomly.
