I am looking for a decent place around RWC to live. My budget points me to Sunnyvale/Hayward but I am concerned about getting into a bad neighborhood.

Any thoughts on a good area for a 30 - 45 minute commute to RWC with affordable housing. (Preferably not Oakland, I don't think I fit in there...)

Obviously you haven't been there. Oakland has a huge range of neighborhoods, and everyone fits in here . That's the beauty of Oakland -- it is a crappy commute to RWC though. It would be 45 minutes in good conditions, and longer on the way home (about 60-75 minutes if you leave at peak time).

Hayward is an OK option, but there is lots of traffic in and around Hayward. It would take 30 minutes from most parts of Hayward, and there are very few amenities. Few good restaurants. Crappy shopping options. I'd skip it -- adding 20 minutes to commute from Oakland would be worth it -- way better neighborhoods with good amenities.

Your best bet is the Peninsula, that is a very congested part of town -- getting around Redwood City takes forever, 101 is especially backed up during the evening commute. It would take about 25 minutes to go to San Mateo Bridge from Redwood City between 5-6:30p.

^I agree with everything you said other than that 101 is the only option. A lot of people skip 101 entirely and take 280 North and switch onto 90 from there if they're going to the Bay Bridge as it only takes a little less than 15 minutes.

I never think of taking the Bay Bridge home from the Peninsula in the PM. I seem to get stuck in the Bay Bridge commute backup. I should give it another try, maybe it is faster is I leave earlier.
