It was probably a coyote or maybe a stray dog, seeing as we don't have foxes or wolves here.

Probably a coyote. They're breeding like rabbits.

Credit the adaptability of animals to urban environments. There was one who made an appearance at Candlestick Park (the home stadium of the San Francisco 49ers) during a Giants' game years ago when they were still playing there.

Black bears "dangerous"? Sounds like someone is talking out of their soiled diapers.
And by the way, they are animals, not "game".

If you shoot them for food or sport, then they are game. Game ANIMALS.

And yeah black bears can be dangerous if hungry, cornered, startled, etc. No, they're not grizzly bears, but they are big and strong, and have sharp teeth and claws and eat meat, and if you do happen to get into a physical altercation with one (unlikely, I know), you will probably not win.

Actually that doesn't matter. Cougars freak out with dogs regardless of their size. Small dogs will tree a cougar just as readily as large ones. In the Rocky Mountain states hunters use dogs to trap cougars. Instinctively the cougar associates the dog with a pack animal like the wolf and the only way they can avoid a confrontation with the pack is to climb a tree.

I witnessed a coyote take out a wild turkey recently on my property--feathers flying and all!!

My kids and husband were inches away from being trampled while pushing the kids our tire swing by a buck that was running at full speed from something.

Glad to hear about mountain lions being afraid of dogs--a couple of years ago, my next door neighbor found mountain lion shi* on his deck (had it "analyzed" by a local wildlife sanctuary to confirm). Needless to say, I have a fairly big dog now.
