Same in Seattle, the fine is daily until it's been removed. Murals and other commissioned artwork on walls are allowed but subject to a permit from the city, and they have to review and approve as to content and colors, in some cases holding a public hearing. There is also a hefty permit fee to be paid to the city.

Oakland Chinatown has been forsaken by its mayor and local government. This once-thriving, immigrant-run community has been the target of continuous violent robberies, with armed perpetrators entering restaurants and victimizing restaurant owners and patrons. From 2010 the present, a rash of brutal homicides and assaults took place in this town, the victims all of Chinese descent. To further exacerbate this situation, taggers spray graffiti all over commercial businesses and signs. Where we often see tagging under freeway overpasses and alleys, the graffiti in Oakland Chinatown is on main streets, directly covering business signs and entrances. The city offers no graffiti abatement program, and the graffiti has not been removed for at least a year. As a result, businesses have shut down.

Created: Aug 10, 2014; We have 30 days to get 100,000 signatures. Please help us - we've lived in this graffiti-filled town for two years.

Hang on, last I heard, there were still very successful Chinese gangs. Not so sure it's white America victimizing the immigrant Chinese population.

Are the violent robberies done by Chinese gangs on Chinese business owners? Last I heard, this is probably the case.

Not saying this is okay. Just want to put the record straight that this is probably a Chinese-on-Chinese crime, not a victimization of Chinese by white Americans.

My dad was a cop in Oakland, and he said trying to get cooperation from Chinese to complain about other Chinese was futile. So what are the cops supposed to do? They ask, who did this? And the answer is, uh we don't know. What are they supposed to do?

When I worked as an apt manager in Santa Clara, we too had to remove graffitti immediately. And actually, if you remove it constantly and immediately, they tend to go somewhere else. Who wants to create art that will be obliterated immediately? And a lot of it is really quite artistic. But, if you put art where it wasn't invited, you take the chance it will be obliterated.

Wouldn't it be a better idea if the City actually let the police enforce laws against vandalism?

There's a city that doesn't allow police to enforce vandalism?

You'll have to explain that one.

Gee, is the elephant in the room that hard to miss? Victimization of Asian Americans by Blacks is quite pervasive.

No More Snow:
There wouldn't be a problem with it if the police enforced it. The City shouldn't hold property owners responsible for their own failures to enforce the laws.
