All 3 of my classes are TWTh late evening, after rush hour. Tolls are different prices throughout the day? Interesting, it's all a flat rate here.

If I ask my parents for some money they wouldn't hesitate, but I've been trying to make this work on my own. I've been finding a lot of decent places in the 800-950 range on craigslist in Richmond and Sunset. My 2nd year I'll definitely be looking at a flat living on my own. For now, want roommates who know the area so I can learn.

Mark- i suggest finding a place to stay while you apartment hunt on airbnb.com i'm traveling out from NJ in two weeks to do exactly that, and i've found a private room and bath for like $30 a night, no taxes, and you stay in someones home, there's many friendly people who offer up a spare room and will feed you, etc.

At first I thought you were spamming us with the link, but I checked it out and it seems legit, and a good option for those who need temporary housing and would rather stay in a home than a hotel / motel / hostel.

Thanks for the info...I've bookmarked it.

I have rented entire flats/houses on airbnb a few times and it has worked out quite well for me, its a legitimate site, and I am pretty sure that you can rent just rooms as well, and many have reviews.

That site is pretty neat, thanks!

Also, any thoughts on Pacific Heights? That's been showing up a lot on my searches, don't know anything about the area.

I'd spend at least a week to find what part of the city fits for you. Unless you're more affluent than the average graduate student, and you're apartment budget seems to indicate that you aren't, you may want to double think the car in San Francisco.
I have a friend who is a well paid tech worker who ditched his car because the parking tickets were getting too expensive. Think $2000 in a few weeks. FYI, parking your car will be the bane of your existence in much of SF.

Pac Hts is very ritzy, lots of mansions. Lower Pac Hts is a bit more modest and is kind of a cool area around Fillmore which bleeds into Japantown which is a great place to get good and fairly cheap Japanese food and groceries, but Lower PH is still pretty expensive, definitely more than the Richmond or the Sunset, and harder to park in too.
