There are alot of things to do ooutside of san francisco that are fun, depending on your idea of fun. Going to the top of mt Diablo as an afternoon trip is fun. Driving through the oakland berekely hills, discovery kingdom in vallejo, the wine train in napa, jelly belly and budweiser free tours in cordelia, Santa Cruz beach boardwalk, and the Monterey bay aquarium are all fun things that I like to do. I have a wife and kids so most fun things I do invlolve them. The bay area is full of stuff to do. There is also a good outdoor gun range in Concord if that's your thing.

Add Big Sur to that list. You're a couple hours away from one of the most beautiful places in the world (as far as I'm concerned). Hit Point Lobos near Carmel if you just want to get a taste. (Carmel's OK but not that huge a deal. Nice beach though, and good restaurants.) It took me five years to figure out that Big Sur starts just a few miles south of Monterey. D'oh.
