The way I see it the bay area is simply a polar opposite of some uber conservative hypocritical place. Both groups do the same thing, they just subscribe to different creatively synthesized political ideologies.

So in say Dallas you got Bible thumpers who say shun a homeless man with out even knowing him.

In they bay area you have liberals ironically Championing Jack London square, with out realizing he was a viral, racist, cowardly author, not worthy of having a toilet named after him.

But than you talk to most liberal 'natives' and transplants for that matter and you realize they have never so much as read even ONE of his works.

The same way the bible thumper does not know that homeless man he shuns, the liberal does not know the author they honor.

Smartest thing you can do around the bay is just not talk politics with non like minded individuals. Save yourself the hassle and drollness of it all.

Actually I lived Berkeley for 5 years before SF, so I knew quite well what I was getting into. One of the very reasons I came here was for that feeling of never being able to forget where you are. But like I said, and as many others would agree, San Francisco is a place to be while you're young and hedonistic, and I don't plan to stay here forever.

SoCal definitely has a different flavor of liberalism that seems to be more tolerant and more laid-back. Berkeley is just a bunch of stoned hippies and is actually a little more open-minded lol. Which is wierd, but maybe because of UC.

These people do not look open minded to me.

Rebels without a cause. Those types of people are harmless, they just need large groups to watch them act out their inner demons.

Not necessarily. . .just be forewarned that you're environment will be quite different from wherever it is you live now.

There will be a certain degree of 'culture shock', but you know, you don't have to become like your new environment, unless you choose to!

You're going there to go to school, and it may a very good one, and worth it to achieve your goals in education for photography.

No. There are good things and annoying things about most everywhere...SF is no exception. In this topic you get a lot of the annoying aspects and while most, if not all, have some basis in reality, keep in mind these don't sum up a city 100% -- far from it.

Where would be a good place to live in SF? House, Appartment, Boat House, WHAT? Keep in mind that I'm a new art student and I'm rather broke!

Rent a room if you are on a tight budget.

Go to classifieds - craigslist

I added "student" to the search because it's always more enjoyable when your roomies are your age.

Enjoy!

I'd search the USF/Panhandle and Lower Pacific Heights districts

Not b/c of SF but rather the school leaves a lot to be desired.

Academy of Art University - SOMA - San Francisco, CA

There are better places to study art/design/photography in the city.
