Bingo. Its a waste of time, money, and effort. Are the people of Oakland and the state going to pay more money, in taxes, to pay for additional jail space, probation officers, and all the lucrative benefits, pensions, et al that go with them, to support this curfew? If not, it is just another meaningless, symbolic gesture.

What an interesting tidbit.

I dont think anything should be off the table anymore-including gang injunctions or curfews.

Crime in much of the city is out of control and these criminals get more brazen when they think there are no consequences to their actions-or they just dont care-and it seems we have a select few who do a huge amount of damage.

A few months ago a trio of robbers were arrested for holding up people as they got out of their cars at night, at gunpoint....on 100+ different occasions. All in the middle and lower income areas from around Fruitvale out to Seminary. That is just abhorrent yet Oakland appears to be where some very, very bad people congregate. They appear to be the same people responsible for much of the horrific crimes we see splashed all over the news.

This crime heat map shows where the brunt of crimes occur:

I added the yellow line to show the city limits because that illustrates that plenty of areas have very low crime relatively speaking.

I recall Jerry Brown saying that at any one time, Oakland is home to 3,000+ parolees and hundreds more are released into Oakland every year and their recividism rate is very high because there are no opportunities for them. If that is the case and we continue to be the dumping grounds of ex-cons, I dont see how Oakland can ever fix its crime rate. And so perhaps another aspect of this entire debate is actual rehabilitation of people in jail and prison and not just incarceration.

And that is a whole other can of worms.

Great map!

A very useful resource for those of us trying to decide on safe, walkable areas in Oakland. I tried, but I can't rep you anymore...looks like I need to keep spreading it around...

Speaking of accidentally shot, the kids should know that cops love those baggy pants with the waistbands riding mid-thigh. Suspect starts running and goes to pull up his pants, a motion that kind of looks like he's going for a gun . . .

A good point, except, unfortunately, they usually are.

I wouldn't say usually... granted, often enough that the motion probably gives police pause for good reason but a lot of these grey areas would be resolved if the police actually knew the people in the community. If you get to know them well enough, people start talking (i.e. telling you who are the real bad apples). There wouldn't be all these "accidental" shootings because you would know who the kids were.

Cops might love the advantage they have chasing people who stumble and bumble trying in vain to run, falling all over their own pants. Also doesn't help one's fighting prowess when one hand is hopelessly preoccupied grabbing one's waistband. An ill-conceived fashion 'statement' that should have played out a long time ago. C'mon kids, you're handicapping yourselves!
