They probably reciprocate this opinion in regards the sloppy tourists staring down at them.

I've always liked seals and sea lionsas part of living near the ocean, and the close-up observation at the Wharf is kind of cool, but not so much with hordes of tourists. "No, I don't want to take your damn picture again! Begone!"

They can produce some of the most epic belches of the animal world.

I want to give a flashback to the late 60’s early 70’s on some of the things mentioned in this thread.

Cable cars used to be 25₵ and even then, the conductor didn't usually go out of his way to collect. There were no long lines at the termini. You could jump on pretty much anywhere even as it was moving. It was generally just a way to get up the steep hills.

The Fisherman’s Wharf was touristy but not as built-out as it is now. The street performers were pretty good (anybody remember the human jukebox?). Alioto’s was the landmark restaurant. In addition, there were some mediocre restaurants with no wait and reasonable prices, like Hungry Tiger.

Alcatraz did not require advance tickets. You just walked up and bought tickets for the next boat. Inside, you got the full tour, they closed the door on you in the ‘hole’ rather than telling you to close your eyes and imagine what it was like. You didn't need to return on the same boat, you can hang out there for a while if you wished.

Lombard St was a novelty but didn't have the long line. These days, I only go down on a bicycle.

The Presidio was still run by the US Army and was clean and maintained

GG Park had Kezar Stadium where the 49ers played.

San Francisco had a lot of charm and was laid back. I think it still is a magnificent city. It is a faster pace now.

True. If no one visits the overrated attractions, commerce will decrease dramatically.

No one fears such a situation developing. Tourists will come, their money will be collected, they will be laughed at, everybody's happy.

And the seals will belch regardless.

It's not really dangerous. There are some scruffy bums around. You're in San Francisco, where bums from all over the west are sent by the local sheriff, who gives them a free one-way bus ticket to get there. Then they qualify for various forms of public assistance that you or I would not get if we were down on our luck.
