Hi all,

I read on another thread that pet deposit is "murder," so I was wondering just how much "murder" meant. What's the typical pet deposit? I've got two kitties and already I'm seeing that some places require an extra $25 a month rent for each cat, but I haven't seen an exact amount for pet deposit yet. TIA!

At my old building in Hayes Valley it was a $200 deposit for a cat or small dog I believe.

The places I looked at recently ranged from $500 deposit + $50/month pet rent to a simple $300 deposit, and no pet rent.

I've lived in three different apartments since moving to the Bay Area. The first place charged nothing, the second place charged $250 per cat (I have 2, so it was $500), and the third place charged $150 for unlimited cats.

I've paid anywhere from $250 + no pet rent to $500 + $60/mo PER PET... the latter being my current place, so I "failed to include" my 3 cats on the rental agreement (just put the dog). Like I'm going to pay a $2000 deposit and $240/mo just for my pets, when I'm already paying $1350 + deposit for a 1br apartment? As if!!!

The Bay Area is notoriously NON-pet-friendly, at least in terms of finding rental units - it really sucks for us animal lovers, huh?

None, just don't say anything about it. Pet "deposit" what a joke. It's a fee, you never get that money back.

Hi Gizmo980,

From reading the forums, I understand that the Bay area is not as pet friendly as I thought it was. When I first visited SF, I noticed all the places that had dog bowls with food outside the door and I thought that was so charming. It was one of the things that made me fall in love with the city. Now I'm starting to think it is all a ruse!

i just offered up a standard deposit = one month's rent plus i paid my last month's rent and my landlord waved the pet deposit. granted, it helps that he is a pretty chill guy and that i explained that i used to be a homeowner myself in CO and i know how to ensure there is no/minimal damage to home based on pet. you may want to try that line?

Yeah, if you can hide Fido or Fluffy, don't mention it. Owner has to give notice before entering the premises, so have a gameplan for pet evacuation and cleanup.
