Generally speaking, Chinese restaurants are fairly family-friendly to the extent that they're used to feeding three-generation families at a table, have high chairs and boosters, and that they're noisy enough so that any noise from kids tends to be drowned out by the din of adults talking. They might not be as kid-friendly if you need to park a stroller because they tend to cram a lot of tables into relatively small spaces.

AAAAHHHHH Ton Kiang, 24th Ave and Geary, outer Richmond District.
Most Americanized in the area. Great Prawns in fact great food. just jump on the #38 bus. Line can be long at times

Travel west on Geary St. about 3 miles from downtown, then stop at the first place that looks good. The difference between that and a touristy Chinatown meal will be that between a steakhouse dinner and a Big Mac.

And BTW: any place that is full of tourists, and used to catering for them, will NOT, repeat NOT, be "kid-friendly".
There are definitely good places in Chinatown...it's almost entirely populated by Chinese people, it would crazy if there weren't any good places. You just have to learn which ones are the good ones.

I went to Ton Kiang and thought the food was gross, especially the dim sum.

Chinatown has a lot of crummy places, almost everywhere I've been there sucked, but Hunan Homes and House of Nanking are very good, and I'm very picky about Chinese food.

If anyone here works downtown, New Ming's on Mission is pretty good for cheap lunch food.

San Tung is also an excellent choice. It's Korean/Chinese, no not fusion. On any given night there will be a waiting line and 99% of their customers are Asian which usually is a good sign the food is flavorful and most importantly authentic. Their chicken wings are what made them famous but they have so many other good dishes too.

I think San Tung is one of the worst places I have ever been to in SF! It is not even half decent Korean Chinese compared to the excellent Korean Chinese places in LA/OC.

Really? What did you order if I may ask. I find it very surprising as all my friends from Chinese friends love it too. It's not the place if you want Korean BBQ.

Yelp - over 2,000 reviews with avg 4/5 stars.
Urbanspoon - almost 300 reviews with avg 4.5/5 stars.
Tripadviser - almost 100 reviews with avg 4/5 stars.

My favorite is R & G Lounge. The Salt and Pepper Crab is amazing and worth every penny. your kids would like the honey ribs, which is good for adults too. The special beef, peking duck and beef brisket clay pot are also good. Use yelp.com to check reviews and find restaurants. the majority of locals use and report their findings on this site.
Hear, here!

One word (or two words) - San Tung. Make sure to yelp it before you order so that you get the right stuff.

Ying Kee Noodle, 9th St, Oakland. So good my Chinese friends would take me there from San Francisco. I don't understand what people mean by "kid friendly" I see plenty kids in these places.
