You can watch your local plutocratic tech overlords like Larry Ellison compensate for their small packages with big boats.

That is my concern. They will build condos and high priced businesses etc. That only the wealthy can afford. At least I am glade they are paying for any and all city services they use.

There's almost nothing intrinsically "exciting" about any sport. If, for any odd reason, however, something triggers you to actually care about the outcome, virtually any form of competition can be hugely exciting. I remember staying up late to watch the 1986 (or was it '87?) America's Cup races with Dennis Connor / Stars & Stripes trying to win back the Cup after losing it for the first time in 100+ years and one one level it was as boring as watching paint dry but since I was rooting for USA it was also strangely compelling. Like all sports, you must find some (preferably legal) way to develop a rooting interest and it will be exciting. Absent a rooting interest, you'll likely be bored out of your mind.

I guess if you like watching a bunch of rich boys with little pee-pees playing in the water, have at it . . .

Most of SF's waterfront is pretty rough around the edges, some sprucing up on someone else's dime would do everyone a favor.
