I can't really weigh in because I haven't been to/participated in these meetings... I might have to go to one to see for myself.

Unfortunately the city is not focused on running things like a business and instead runs the city like a social club -- as long as everybody likes each other it is OK.
And they keep getting re-elected... De La Fuente has been there 19 years, Nancy Nadel and Jane Brunner -- 15 years, and Larry Reid, 14 -- it's time for them to go.

Well, De La Fuente and Reid were the ones who pushed for the gang injunctions and youth curfews but were effectively rejected by their peers.

But I do agree, we need new blood in City Hall across the board.

I had much higher hopes for Jean Quan, not that she will be able to wave a wand and fix our problems, but too much of her response to pressing issues has been to do more of the same.

I ache for a new approach to governing this city.

Those are exactly the hopes (well, expectations) I had for Quan, and she's fulfilling them beautifully. She's out of her depth as the mayor of Oakland. The only person at this point who could change the tide in the city is Russo, but I doubt he wants the job.

I dont know if anyone can really do the job because of resistance from Oaklanders themselves to change-even if its positive change. We want get better from this illness, but we dont want to take the medicine.

NYC has 20 times more people than Oakland but they were able to squash their crime rate in half and is today, below the national average not sacrificing diversity, not sacrificing the poor, not sacrificing anything that defines that city except GRIT. Why can't we do the same?

Sounds like you people need to elect a fiscal conservative. LMAO!!!!!

You keep getting the same results because you keep electing the same kind of leaders who are all of the same mind set.

Its not just a problem in your city but it is an endemic example and a microcosm of the state of California

Because other than Jerry Brown there hasn't been a mayor in modern times who has been willing to put in the work to make things happen in Oakland. Not to say he was a perfect match for the city (and with corruption/backroom deals of his own) but he was the only one to take charge and get dirty when he had to what needed to be done. Harris, Dellums, Quan, etc were all either too lazy, out-to-lunch or entrenched in cronyism to do the same, and I don't see anyone else on the horizon who will change that trend.

Yup...it's like they just want a cozy government sinecure instead of actually having to do any work. First of all we need more cops, even in Rockridge I don't like the idea that if I call 911 for a crime I have no idea if the cops will even show up. That's just ridiculous and breeds anarchy and crime.

He did enjoy the support of many in the trenches...

Several business leaders feel his departure is just another set back.

I've often wondered why top officials never seem to stay around these days...

Memory is a little fuzzy, but it wasn't all that long ago when the chief would make a career out of it like Chief Hart in Oakland or Chief Murphy in SF...

The one exception is the recently retired Alameda Sheriff... he was there for a very long time.
