I do not feel like we are getting the cream of the crop in terms of municipal leaders. It is a little surprising, since there are so many bright people who care about Oakland. Unfortunately, these people do not have the connections to push out the incompetent incumbents. Hopefully this changes soon. We need an Occupy Oakland City Hall movement.

As a kid who grew up with a Dad who had some political aspirations, the reason we don't get the cream of the crop is what we are seeing.... stuck politicians.

In most places, you step up. So the logical step is success in local, move to county, then to state, then to Federal.

But here -- if one of our long term council members sought to move to county government in an elected position, they wouldn't stand a chance. The other canditate would point to Oakland, and lay the blame at the feet of the guy or gal who's running.

So any one with any interest in a politcal future wouldn't delve into Oakland politics -- it's a dead end.

The last governor used his position too, except it didn't have anything to do with politics. We should just go ahead and let Ron Jeremy or Dr. Dre have a go at it.

Actually, no. Tommy Chong. CA's economy would explode like none other in history.

I'd vote for Tommy Chong -- but can we? Does his federal convistion preclude him from running?

He has seemed increasingly deflated in media interviews and of course was up for the job in San Jose last winter.

Hopefully the next Chief will actually have the opportunity to lead.
Obviously that is not what the City Fathers want.
Batts is a man of his conviction, I hope he finds a City deserving of him

He was dealing with several bosses locally, budget cuts, a Federal mandate, all in addition to the thing he would face in any city; the police union. To rehire a proper number of officers, either extra funding, or officers being willing to take pay and benefit cuts to more reasonable levels (good luck). Additionally, a review of the training and oversight layers within the department would have required resources. None of this is apparently going to happen in these times. Best we can probably hope for is for the eventual Federal oversight to be beneficial.
