I'm curious, it seems to be accepted as common knowledge that the people coming to San Francisco now stay for a few years and leave, whereas in the past they put down roots. But has this been actually verified by hard data? Otherwise it strikes me simply as a purely anecdotal, "back in my day" assertion.

I also would question the claim that these same people have no real community spirit. I think if you were to poll those who volunteer or participate in neighborhood or community organizations, you'd find just as many transplants as you'd find natives. Obviously this is a theory that can't be easily tested.

There's been plenty written about it over the years...here's a few examples and some stats. Hard data within articles and some census figures.

Again, I don't take issue with transplants. My husband is one. I have more of a problem with the mass migration of the middle class and families out of the City. I don't know how old you are, but I would bet that you'll not settle here once (or if) you meet someone, start a family, retire, etc

Because parents do not have assurance they will even be able to send their kids to the school near them, and often times are not able to and have to drive their kids all the way across town to another school, many families have opted out of living in SF for the peninsula. When we have kids and they are school age, if we are not able to send our children to schools near us, we will have to leave this city too if this is how the system will still be.

It kind of enrages me to think there are illegal immigrants who are not paying taxes, and yet have children in the US and are able to send their kids to the best schools in SF simply because they live in an "underperforming area" and us legally employed, tax paying folks can't even send our kids to the school nearest to us because those spots are given to said children. Granted not all of them are like that, but I am sure there are many of them. The biggest group that wants to stick with this unfair, inefficient system are the school educators. What they need to do is stop shuffling kids all over the city and have some accountability to make ALL of our schools good schools- then we they wouldn't feel the need to give anyone special privileges.

What this system does is punish middle class families, takes from them and gives to the poor. If anything, they should be taxing the rich more and giving to the poor. It is the middle class who send their children to public schools, not the rich- the rich send their kids to private schools so it has no effect on them. So essentially it is a system that benefits the poor, punishes the middle class, and does nothing to the rich. Further contributing to the hollowing out of the middle class leaving a city filled with the poor and the very rich as many of you have observed about SF.

Read about Proposition H and vote 'Yes' on it.
Those who purport to advocate for the underclass claim like the vociferous minions of the "Occupy" camps, that the rich are not paying their share, that the rich get unfair educational advantage, etc. Therefore, taxes and educational leveling result. Now, to wax even more non PC. Those purporting to advocate for the underclass actually don't hate the rich. They hate the middle class. Why? Because the middle class are living proof of income mobility and the potential of the underclass. They are living proof that statism and socialism are not the best way to improve the lot of the underclass. Therefore, they must go.

I prefer NYC over SF. One hour east and you can swim (yes, you can actually swim) on some of the best beaches in the world. Cross over the George Washington, and you hit the Palisades, Hudson Highlands, and the Catskills beyond. Great hiking and snowshoeing in the winter. SF summers are too cold and depressing for my tastes. Also, SF has a horrible homeless problem that seems to be getting worse every year. SF looks beautiful from afar, but once you get close (and start living there for awhile), it starts to become depressing.
