This is different. Chinese didn't have the money to have autos before so they were forced to bike. Whereas we have the money and we have a choice and biking is clearly a better choice.
I heard there was a week long traffic jam in China somewhere- probably Beijing. They are basically importing many aspects of US culture, including the negative ones like car culture and fast food. The obesity rates in China are rising rapidly from what I hear.

I went to San Jose Bike Party last night and it was crazy. The theme was Rapture to honor (sarcastically) that Harold Camping guy and people wre dressed in Angels and Demons costumes. 4000+ cyclists and fireworks!

"A new ordinance proposed by John Avalos last week (pdf) wants the owners of commercial buildings to treat bikers the same. Well, maybe not as well as Hurley’s employer, but the ordinance would require owners to either provide secure bicycle parking or allow their tenants to bring their bicycles into the building."
