if you want to raise two kids, buy a 2000 sq ft house, 3 bedrooms in a safe place, decent cars, vacations, eat out every so often, upper middle class I'd say....how much do you need to make to do that in the mountain view area? We are both professionals with the ability to make some good money, and have one daughter. The question for us at this point is if we want to have another little one, could we make it without me working.....or should we just move out of CA all together. I don't so much mind paying 900K for a house if I don't have to then pay for private school. I do however need to be able to be safe and feel like the work i do and the time away from my kids is worth it.....

Only you can decide that one. Is it worth it?

Doing upper middle class is tough in the Bay Area. Most do the long commute trade off.

Upper middle class in the south Bay? Well into the six figures. Median family income in Mountain View, typical of most nice areas in the vicinity, is over $100,000. Middle class is generally defined as the 45 to 15 percentile in income, so figure $120,00 to $250,00 (or so) for middle class. Upper middle class from there up to maybe $400,000. There's a tremendous amount of high income jobs in the south Bay.

You don't need $250,000+ to live well, however. Aside from housing, most of the costs are pretty comparable to anyplace else. Eating out is going to cost a bit more than some areas, but nothing outlandish. A 3-series certainly won't stand out but the south Bay isn't like Los Angeles. It's not hyper-consumptive. You can drive whatever you feel like without committing social seppuku.

You would definitely be able to make $900,000 work in Redwood City... I'd look at the area around Upton & Roosevelt. Here's an example of a 3,500 square feet+ house in that area for exactly $900,000:

2610 CARSON St, Redwood City, CA 94061 | MLS# 81143906

If you look for houses that are closer to $700,000 in that area then you can still find houses that fit your needs. That would put you in the area for Roy Cloud (one of the best public elementary schools in the Bay Area), North Star Academy (one of the best middle schools in the Bay Area) and Sequoia High (IB Program school) and you're less than 15 minutes away from Mountain View assuming that's where your job is.
