La Taqueria up past Mission/26th is still around (they closed the San Jose location, RIP). They have the best chicken quesadilla I've ever had.

I wish I knew the name of the Chinese place in Oakland's Chinatown I used to go to. You know how it is, I didn't even register the name, just how I'd walk to it from the BART station. Even then I'd get lost sometimes. I think it was on Webster but it was next to another place that wasn't as good for war wonton soup. That's my comfort food. War wonton soup and a free weekly.

Most taquerias around here use grungy, greasy, slimy dark meat chicken for all their chicken dishes, and I hate dark meat. Azteca used white meat chicken that was nicely grilled to a crisp, threw it on a tortilla with some cheese and heated it up. Real simple and really tasty with some salsa on the side.

IIRC, unless it's changed La Taqueria uses stewed whole chicken, so it's a very flavorful sauced filling in large chunks of dark and white. They really crisp the tortilla so you have to eat it quick or it sogs up.

I personally like dark meat, though, and they raise chickens with artificially big t*ts for white .

Hillstone on the Embarcadero has outstanding burgers when in the mood for one. Also has outstanding grilled artichokes, filets and crab cakes! Yummy!!!!

I love the Bay Area: look at the variety of comfort food choices.

Food here is good mainly because of the variety but I miss Chicago sometimes...food there comes in portions twice as big and at half the cost...

Holder's Country Inn for a good hearty American-style breakfast. Can't be beat. Their pancakes are to die for. Oh, but San Jose only.

I get homesick for the City when I think of the duck noodle soup with the thick rice noodle at King of Thai on Taraval...also the raviolis at Marcello's (real old style American/Italian food) on the same street. For breakfast, the Pork Store on Haight, and Ella's on California St (just about anything on the menus). I LOVE the Taiwan Restaurant on Clement for dumplings of any kind. Burritos from La Taqueria also.
