My God what a shamefully mismanaged city but then again it's ghetto no self respect populace is to blame. You can't squeeze wine from a lemon. Oakland is more of a war zone than Iraq these days.

The arbitrarily-bounded amalgamation labeled "Oakland" is a composition of many very different communities. What comes out in the press is a label that does not delineate between those - thus the violence stat is of little practical use, since the great majority of that activity occurs in very specific locations, the denizens of which would generally prefer to be in the nicer, safer parts of town, but are stuck in the crossfire zone due mainly to economic factors.

Saying "Oakland is violent" is just lazy. People that live there get sick of it, especially hearing that old line while doing what they can to improve the situation.
Agree, I have never been to Oakland, but as I live in Brooklyn, NY I know if people went by the crime stats coming from Brownsville, Bed-Stuy and East New York they would have no idea that a good portion of Brooklyn is more then fine...where I live borders Gravesend & Bensonhurst and it's not the wild west...there are plenty of good and bad in every city.

That said Oakland is on my short list of places I would live if I ever moved out west, right next to Portland, OR and Los Angeles.
