When I worked as a firefighter for CDF, I'd spend some time in the evening reading the "Manual of Instruction" for rules and try to figure out a way to comply with the letter of the rule and totally do something that was against the spirit of the rule.

My best was finding out that between Nov 1 and April 1, the "official" winter uniform could be a green baseball cap with fur flaps (I called them Korea hats) and 1 1/2" wide brown suspenders.
I bought a set for me and the other 2 guys on shift. We pulled our pants up real high (like Pee Wee Herman) and when or Battalion Chief showed up, he went ballistic. Our Captain was stationed at the HQ station 15 minutes away and 35 minutes later he showed up and tried to ream us a new one. I loved pointing out that we were just wearing the officially authorized uniform and that if he had a problem with that, we would just have to go above everyone's head and file a complaint with the regional office. (BTW, the suspenders over the badge and nameplate were pretty uncomfortable).

Point made, we never wore them again.
