Maybe if you actually enjoyed all that there is in SF. or just moved to a place where you can partake in it's attributes; You would not be so pre-occupied with other people's enthusiasm to the point where you create a thread like this.
Didn't create the thread.. and as I recall it is entitled 'San Francisco is the most overrated city in California'. You can love a place, much like I love the bay area/San Francisco w/o acting like its the only place on earth with beautiful things... Thus leading to overrate many things it has that other places do too... And trust me, I've enjoyed every bit of SF.. Sometimes more than my techie friends who live in it but never go out/explore because they are working 12 hours a day.

What you are saying applies to practically every other city and place in the USA. I don't think SF's overrated compared to all the other cities that are "overrated".

Look for the good and little things that are "real" in SF.

There is a tiny home baked goods place on eddy between franklin and van ness. It's run by a middle-aged woman who bakes muffins, scones, turnovers, etc. early every morning. She sells-out of her goodies by 10am every morning. The locals on her block love her non-descript (non-gentrified) little hole in the wall place.

They talk local politics - "who actually voted for "Lee", cuz I didn't". It has character because she works hard and loves what she's doing, and the locals love her goodies and dedication. The place looks like grandmas 1950's kitchen.......and smells soo good too.
Again.... As if no other place in the world has this... I am not trying to downplay what your experiences or these little gems .. I know of quite a few myself .. I love this place for brunch :
Brenda's French Soul Food - Civic Center/Tenderloin - San Francisco, CA

Sucks because everyone knows about it and the lines are usually long as hell :

I can then turn right around and point out a beer bar tucked away in Orlando FL that has the best beer selection I have ever seen and is ranked #4 in the world... A cuban bakery that sells out just the same as the one you mentioned that is all the rave. A rib joint in texas that will make you lick the plate.. List goes on and on ... Best sandwich I ever had .. I thought was Ike's in SF .. which is just annoying to go to now, prices have gotten absurd due to popularity and being in SF, and lines are always long .. but then I went to this place in Orlando..

...
and was blown away by their interesting and amazing sammies...

So now, having traveled the world.. U.S .. I note every place has interesting things that I can grow accustomed to .. I can name 50 sushi restaurants in the bay area and only 2-3 i like .. I can name the best one (i felt) was in a place in FL ... I can name the most amazing pizza I've had in NY ....

and I dunno, I love travelling. I love having the free time to travel. Home I want to be affordable and nicely sized for my kids to enjoy.. near good schools.. I want gobs of money left over for a rainy day, investing, and for funding travelling AROUND the world .. My backyard, once I explore and find things i like and settle on .. is my backyard.. I'm mainly at work .. and as I develop a family it will mainly be w/ them .. I was young, I came out and did the young thing.. I have been to every corner in SF .. I've snowboarded almost every season in Tahoe.. I've done damn near everything.. They are experiences.. As much as I love x, it just becomes normal after its a part of your day to day... I want to go ski the alps .. mix it up some years.. want to go visit London ...... see what their cities are like .. want to go So, being price conscious, what people are saying is ... You pay out the a$$ for many of the same experiences you can have elsewhere .. what gives? and to that people reply, Ohhhh... but it's soo much more amazing.. Which, upon reflecting on my travels, it's not.. It's more of the same stuff I see everywhere I go. pffftttt

If you do live in SF and don't make good money, the place must suck for you and others like you.
If you do live in SF and do make good money, you are destroying its culture and the very neighborhood you chose to live in.
If you live in SF and don't have kids, you are destroying the city for the families and good people who lived there before you.
If you live in the city and do have kids, you are scarring them for life.

In general, if you live in the city, you are a fool who's paying too much for the privilege of destroying things for others.

Did I miss anything?
Don't overrate a place that has many of things other places have.
Don't act like SF is the only place on earth w/ cafe's, outdoor activities, interesting culture, good Restaurants...
Gentrification is real and has damming effects on a city's dynamic. SF is being heavily gentrified and is discussed at length by many insiders/outsiders/city planners/etc.

The schools in San Francisco do generally suck in about half of the city.. The areas where it doesn't have home prices in the $600k+ range.
School Rankings for the City of San Francisco, CA

If you overrate a place and act like its the only place on earth w/ a cafe on a corner or mixed development, people are going to question whether you get out much as they should...

Trends and trajectories matter for the future ... The past is the past .. A city's past culture/history don't matter if the trend/trajectory of the future is a big deviation from it.

A lot of people don't think beyond the surface or feel beyond the surface.. Perspective is hard to have when you haven't traveled much .. Markets aren't always right on pricing things.. Many times it can be over-rated and over-priced. History and the present a sure indicator of how nutty things can get by so called rational/intelligent people.

Ok, so your point is that there are too many SF's that think that SF is the only place on earth with beautiful things. ---- That would be one definition of being provincial.

San Franciscans have always been provincial. Yes, there are nice things in SF, but when they think no other place has nice things, then I call them bay area snobs depending upon their attitude.

My point is that this attitude exists in other places too. SF is not mutually exclusive in their provincialism.

Per the thread title.. my comments are appropriate and there appears to be many 'snobs' as you call them in this thread.. The important thing for people assessing various places is to understand this 'snobbery' exists especially when one suggests X is #1 .. Y is #50 .. this is a broad based consensus and the reasoning is based on anecdotal experiences places that can be found in both X and Y... In this way, you have a better appreciation in weighing X and Y relative to each other vs. buying into some broad based consensus that X is that much more amazing than Y... and snob levels (provincialism) tends to vary when it comes to places that are held to be 'hot spots'. So, my point, in summary, as it pertains to the title is :
... Don't overrate things. SF is cool. So are many other places. meh'

Exactly. This is just another thread for the SF haters to hate away.

SF - 1,024
Fresno - 585

Property crime rate:
Fresno - 4,636

Haven't smoked in almost a decade. Catchy SF song tho. Dudes were talking about dank in the early 90's when the rest of the country was smoking dirt from mexico and the islands.

I hope you realize that you're one of the biggest snobs in this thread... the whole 'I've traveled eeeeeeverywhere and know alllll the good spots' thing is a little tiring.

Yes, I like SF. Yes, I've also traveled to many, many places ( I was not born in the US, but moved here when I was 11) and I can still appreciate the awesomeness that is SF. Do I feel it's the only beautiful place out there? No, and I don't think anyone has said that. Every time anyone says they like SF, you chime in saying they have obviously never traveled and that it's highly overrated... I just don't get it. I don't care that it's a hot spot, I like it because I like it period.

Oh, and I'm a woman, not a 'bro'.
