Interesting. If the points made in this article are true, then I think we are better off without him.

1 Totally evacuating town most weekends when the crime rate is at its highest. This is preposterous.

2. Taking off from work several hours early as to have an extended weekend while subordinates stayed well into the night commanding the policing efforts of the OPD.

3. Becoming a Bay Area media darling at the expense of Oaklanders.

4. Meeting with the press more than with elected officials seemingly to sell his brand more than in an effort to fix crime.

5. Being uhappy with Mayor Quan's hands on approach to govrernance-especially when she hired a crack whip city administrator that was strict with department heads such as Batts when it came to time off and being accountable for their time.

The Absent Police Chief | Politics & Government | Oakland, Berkeley, Bay Area & California | Robert Gammon

I dunno Batts-fans(I was once one admittedly), how do we spin this into a positive?

Furthermore, crime went up during his tenure after 3 straight years of steady decline-not saying he's to blame, but if crime were going down during his tenure make no mistake he and his supporters would be assigning him all the credit.

I had my suspicions when he lost out on the San Jose position. The media spun it to appear it was his decision after Quan acted to improve areas of the department, but I don't think that was quite the case.

I am inclined to agree with you.

Our crime rate increased under his tenure after 4 consecutive years of decline before and that speaks more loudly to me than seeing his bleached teeth smiling on TV.

Good Riddance.

Sounded good when he got here and he had many challenges to work through but in the end his tenure in Oakland was the epitome of Big Hat, No Cattle . . .
