I've been trying to find a room for rent for a while now there's so many rooms for rent in the Sunset/Ingleside SFSU area. Do you consider that the city or a good part of SF?

Anyone know of any other sites than Craigslist to find a room for rent?

I really want to live in an area with good bus service, the duboce triangle seems like the best area or the mission what's your opinion where the best public transportation is? I'll be taking the bus a lot late at night so keep that in mind.

Thanks everyone!

It's ok, just kinda boring, foggy, and in an out of the way part of the city. There's definitely always a lot of cheap rentals around there. I don't think it would be good for bus service, the L/K/M are probably the best option depending on where you are, they don't really run them often enough, I'd hate to have to depend on the K or M to get home every night, it's a pretty long ride from downtown too.

Somewhere like the Duboce Triangle or Hayes Valley areas would be good since they're pretty central. Go to the SF MTA website and look up bus lines and see which ones say they run about every 5 minutes, those are the best ones because you can rely on them coming pretty frequently. Some good bus lines are the 49, 38 and 14, they run pretty frequently most of the time. The 22 is ok too but not as good. The 33 is really flaky and they don't run them often enough. BART within SF is good because it's several lines running through the same track so they come pretty frequently even at night. Muni Metro between Embarcadero and West Portal is good too because you have 3 to 5 lines running through the same stations, but once they start branching out they get really flaky.

Yeah, I've been perusing CL for rentals and I noticed this yesterday. It seems like 9/10 listings are for this area. Is there a better way to look than on CL? Is it worth working with a broker? Personally I've had the best luck getting in the car and driving around. Maybe I'll have to stick with the ole fashioned method for securing the best rentals.

The further West (and to a degree, North) the better, the further East the worse.

Anything that is within the city limits of San Francisco is the city. Whether or not you want to live in any particular neighborhood is a personal decision but the geographic boundaries of the city are not arbitrary.

How "good" the transit service is depends on where you need to go most often. If you are working downtown then any main line with stops near your home and work will be good. The shorter the distance, the better.

I've lived in ParkMerced and it's pretty dull. My 22-year-old niece lives near West Portal and she loves it, despite working on the Embarcadero and going to school in SoMa. The K,L and M being nearby helps a lot and they have owl service.

Sometimes you get great transit through pure serendipity. When I lived in Corona Heights, I could take any Metro line to Church Station, where I caught the 37 Corbett bus. This route resembled a figure eight, with buses going in both directions right at the Church station. I lived at the "waist" of the figure eight, again with bus stops in both directions just one block from my flat.
