So, live in Pleasant Hill or Concord. $1000 will get you a studio. There are BART stations in both towns. The nearest shopping center is Sun Valley Mall in Concord

I just took a quick look at Pleasant Hill rentals on craigslist. There are tons of apartments for under 1000$. As someone also mentioned, you can look into Concord which can be a little more affordable depending on the neighborhood.

Pleasant Hill is a pretty decent town, though I think most of the activities/bars are out in Concord. Like the other posters said, BART is nearby. I have heard some bad things about certain parts of Concord, but for the most part it seems fine. They have a great drive-in movie theater in Concord that actually gets pretty packed on the weekends. You should check it out!

Walnut Creek is nice too and not far (about 3-4 miles). There is a BART station, a large downtown with lots of stores and many nice restaurants. I have no idea about rent prices but I hear it might be more expensive than Pleasant Hill.

There are nice apartment buildings near WC, PH, and Concord Bart. WC is the most expensive but also the best if you don't have a car, because there is a vibrant downtown nearby. However, it'll be hard to live in any of those places without a car. I'm hoping the Bart thing is only for work but not for errands? Because without a car, you won't even be able to buy groceries in suburbia.
