1.7 million strong in this 'edge location'.

We thank the green belt policies for proper environmental stewardship of our hillsides, that we may not have to endure obnoxious millionaires carving them up to make castles for themselves at the expense of what little open space we have left.

Good. We'll happily keep them. But be careful what you wish for - you might see the return of the old L.A. Chargers, which will cause some degree of consternation among the many Raider faithful in that neck of the woods. Raider/Charger games at Farmers' Field could present quite the spectacle.

You think in the case of the 49ers, people from Marin (or the odd Far East Bay or Far North Bay Fan) will still attend in person? Even the City fans will trail off.

In the case of the As, it's even more extreme. The As fan base is very East and North biased. Lots of them will fall off.

As populous as the South Bay is, it's still essentially at an edge location. Thank the green belt for that. South County and beyond never really took off in the same fashion as the inner East Bay, and more recently, the North Bay and Eastern and Northern hinterlands.

The center of Bay Area population has tended to move Eastward over time, not Southward.
Your big problem is thinking that the same amount of people live north or SF/Oakland as south. Compare the population of Santa Clara Valley to Marin, Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties (a huge area from the coast to Sacramento area) combined. Not even close. That doesn't even include the peninsula and the Fremont-Livermore-Hayward triangle which are easily capable of reaching an SJ ballpark.

And, if I may speak in anecdotes, Pleasant Hill and Martinez are not A's (or Raiders) strongholds. How north and east are you talking? Even Sacramento, home of the AAA's, leans toward the Giants. Where exactly is the fabled heart of this fanbase? No wonder they are moving much further from the competition.

I don't think that, at least not exactly.

But what has happened is, since growth was capped at the south end, it went East along I-580 corridor and Northeast along the I-680, Hwy 4 and 80 corridors. Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, etc, it all adds up. Add in Marin and Sonoma on top of that.

The fact remains, even with 1.7M people the South Bay is not near the overall center of population.

With that many people, does it even matter? Let the rest become bandwagon Giants fans if they're so troubled.

They already are Giants fans, hence the problem.
