Why would they change their brand if it's successful? If a new team were to set up camp in Santa Clara, it probably wouldn't be called "San Francisco," but there is a history and fanbase being maintained in the move down the road. Most of the region lives in smaller municipalities so they see "San Francisco," "Oakland" and "San Jose" as being homes teams just the same.

Also, the NFL began with four teams all in Ohio, not the northeast.

A loan is not real money. There must be all sorts of contingencies in the deal. Many, many trip wires.

Same BS that NIMBY's opposing the Earthquakes stadium and the A's stadium are feebly putting forth. Go ahead and spend all your money...you're gonna lose. If you wanna live in Topeka, then move to Kansas.

It's not about NIMBY, it's about the money. Look, I'd be the first to welcome a new stadium anywhere in the Bay Area. But when you do a bait and switch election to dupe the voters, and you are a city council bought and paid for by the 9ers' current dirty ownership, these are the types of sleazebag antics one would expect. As I have said elsewhere, this is more Jersey than Jersey.

Slimy, dirty, horrible stuff.

Amazing that such (formerly?) high quality community as Santa Clara has fallen so far into the gutter. Unreal.

From the comments in the SJMN article, I could not have written it any better:

"The 49ers are not putting one cent into the project. It's $850 million of your money ($31,000 from each Santa Clara family) and $150 million from the NFL. As the WSJ suggested yesterday, this is the stupidest of any public participation in a stadium venture ever in the United States. All going to make billionaires richer. I pray for all my friends in Santa Clara you get the chance to overturn this sell out by your 49er bought City Council."

It's really not the same BS, since the Newhall *******s are not complaining about money at all.

Also, Santa Clara's new mayor is anti-stadium, pretty much the opposite of Mahan who facilitated the deal to begin with.

Newhall *******s are certainly complaining about the EQ stadium, as are Santa Clarans are re: Niner stadium in addition to the money.

If the Raiders move there, I'll gladly buy a nice house right next to it, when somebody decides to sell low, pick up and run.

I don't really know anyone who is happy about the Niners moving to Santa Clara. Yeah I'm sure South Bay residents are happy but not a single person who've I talked to about wants them to move all the way down there.

Same here. I was at a bar watching the Monday Night game vs. the Steelers, and ESPN showed some of the architectural design drawings for the Santa Clara stadium. Every single person at the bar was booing at the screen.
