Well, the Giants are definitely hated in L.A, but thats really the extend of the rivalry from my experience as an L.A native. These responses have been very interesting. More honest and sincere than I expected, which is great. The Hollywood thing is interesting, as it is such a big part of L.A, which includes plastic surgery and vapid celeb ladder climbing etc....but It also means that its a city with more artists than anywhere, and arts and culture from all corners of it's socio economic populace. Because it has little to no European root, it doesn't match other cities, and because of Standard Oil, etc, turning it into a car city, it can be a hard place to access if your from somewhere else, which makes it all the more easy to simply write off with some hand me down stereotypes. This does feel like it's changing though (as mentioned earlier) and it's exciting. I just moved to New York, and find myself missing all of CA, Norte y Sur.

The guy at the door told me that people from Los Angeles aren't really liked around here. What the ? Yeah, I missed the game that day.

2.Water. Growing up in Los Angeles (1990's) residents were told when they could water their lawns. It was like monday, wednesday, and Friday home addresses with odd number could water the lawn and Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday even numbered addresses could water their lawns. Also, it had to be before 10am or after 6pm. If you violated these rules you risked the chance of getting a ticket.

3. Money and political power. To this day the 710 fwy does not connect to the 210 fwy. It just isn't going to happen. The political powers in South Pasadena won't allow it. So now, exit the 710 at Valley and take the street for 15-30 minutes (depending on traffic) until you reach the 210 and continue on your journey.

4. Hollywood culture. No one in Los Angeles is preoccupied with movie stars. Those are tourist. Yeah, we're vain and materialistic but we're not playing paparazzi. We have better things to do.
Okay, I have to add two things:
-Every person I know in LA is, in fact, completely obsessed with celebrities. It's not a tourist thing. People in SD or SF rarely talk about that stuff.

-Water rationing: it's not an LA thing. I grew up in the 80s in the inland East Bay, and we had massive water rationing during a 7 year drought. We could only use 280 gallons a day (70 gallons per person), which had to take care of two lawns, a pool, showering, etc. Everyone's lawns were dead for a few years. This was in the Contra Costa Water District. In different years, it was nearby EBMUD. Nice neighbors would run hoses across busy intersections if they were in the non-rationing district, so that people in the rationing district across the street could have their cheaper water.
