Cheapest safe city with good public transportation to SF?

El Cerrito is BORRRRING. All of the areas mentioned in Oakland are pretty fun. (and accessible to more fun areas in Oakland)

The Inner Sunset or Inner Richmond would work if you can afford them, they have a lot of Asian groceries and restaurants on Clement and on Irving. Either should be about 30 to 45 minutes to downtown SF. They do get really foggy and windy and chilly most of the year though so you might not like that.

For Oakland I'd say Rockridge is the best neighborhood for a young single woman because it has a BART station in the middle of it in a safe location. The Macarthur station is more convenient to the Temescal and the Piedmont Ave area and is kind of ok but the part of Telegraph around it is pretty seedy--lots of liquor stores and crappy fast food places. You'd have to have a higher tolerance of urban living than in Rockridge.

Also I'd check out the areas near the Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill stations, they're more suburban towns but have some apartments pretty close to the BART stations.
