Hello,

My fiancé's sister is moving to California with a family she nannies for. She does not live with them and they are moving to Cow Hollow. She cannot afford this area on her salary and I'm looking for some good alternatives.

She would prefer to be under $1000 a month and a relatively safe area. Near transit would be nice.

Thanks for any help

On that budget, it will need to be a roommate situation. There's just no other way to get to that budget and be in a good situation. She can also get much closer to Pacific Heights/Cow Hollow that way if not actually in them.

Second that. Even Daly City would not fit the budget. Living with roommates can be fun, and PH/Cow Hollow is a great place to live.

How is this situation working exactly? She's moving from Boston to SF to nanny for this family, but they're NOT providing her living space and they're paying a wage that she can't live on?

Yeah that sucks. She'll probably end up living in a dumpy apartment with sketchy roommates in Daly City or Oakland and spend over an hour getting to work every day.

$1000 should give you some options in Marina/Cow Hollow with roomies. It's very common in San Francisco to have roomies, many professionals have them.

She could definitely find a decent room to rent in a nice part of San Francisco with $1000/month. Check Richmond District, USF/Panhandle, Haight, and Pac Heights.
