I live in the East Bay and will be taking evening classes there this summer. I would be taking MUNI back to 16th Mission BART and I would just like to know if it is a safe area should I end up staying late or just want to walk around the neighborhood and explore. This is one corner of the City I've just never had an opportunity to visit.

Thank you! I appreciate your help.

Its not that bad but it has some seediness to it. The area directly South is one of San Francisco's worst housing projects. The only reason I would't be comfortable there is cause you might be one of the only people on the street there at night time. 16 and mission has much more crime but it feels a lot safer because of all the people in the area to be honest. By all means, Portero Hill aside from the projects isn't too rough.

Should be fine. Around 18th and Arkansas there's a lot of cute local restaurants and hangouts.

It's fine. The North Slope of Potrero Hill is very safe. But the South Slope around 23rd St and Arkansas and its surrounding areas is definitely to be avoided, day or night; not that there's any reason for you to be in that area. You can even see the neighborhood drastically turned very sketchy 1/4 block from the projects. Just take my word for it, don't go see for yourself.

So stay on the North Slope and you have nothing to worry about. There are a few shops on 20th St, and 18th St. is where the yummy (but expensive) restaurants are at. You may also want to check out the cafes on 3rd St.
.

Thank you so much for your responses! That's very helpful. I guess it will be okay. Just keep north!
