There's no place safer than West Oakland. Not Beverly Hills, not Irvine, not Danville, not San Ramon, no city! West Oakland is a bastion of cleanliness and safety.

I'm really sick of saying this, BUT:

Unless you actually LIVE or have LIVED in West Oakland (Like I have for the past 5 years), everything you have to say about the place doesn't hold much weight. EXPERIENCE counts far more in this world than opinions.

In my EXPERIENCE, West Oakland is generally safe if you have street smarts and common sense. At worst, people mind their own business, and at best, there's a pretty strong sense of community, and neighbors tend to watch out for each other.

In my OPINION, it feels safer than the Mission. Although, I've never actually lived there, that's just how I FEEL walking at night. Could I be wrong? Absolutely. But my EXPERIENCES (seeing a dead body near Shotwell comes to mind), form my OPINION.

Now is where people from the Mission can feel to chime in and tell me how wrong I am for my OPINION.

See how this works?

Actually suggesting West Oakland feels safer than the Mission really isn't saying much.

But the Mission is generally accepted as safe, even though that is far from the case.

I don't get that impression at all from people, many I know still look down on the Mission for having a lot of crime. It may not be considered one of the worst up there with Hunter's Point and the like but most people I know still seem to think the Mission has a lot of crime. It seems to be in the media relatively often for serious crimes too.

I was just about to comment. I don't know anyone who thinks the Mission is super safe and I've been in the Bay for 20+ years. I see articles on SF Gate all the time which cover crimes that took place in the Mission.

Quit putting words into my mouth-I never said the Mission was 'super safe'

Regardless, I'm a little confused by this 'retort', as the Mission is one of the most vibrant, popular neighborhoods in SF. It has great nightlife and excellent dining, which make it a very desirable neighborhood for a lot of people. I've argued about its safety with countless posters on this board, so I'm wondering why people are suddenly agreeing with me about crime being such a problem there. Did the Mission really deteriorate so drastically during the last year or two, or has West Oakland really cleaned up its act? I don't think either is the case, but I'm dying to know...
