I am completely lost when it comes to CA. I am originally from Ohio, lived in Arizona (and loved it) for 7 years, now in Temecula (and hate it) for a year. Wish i could live in San Diego or Del mar, but I'm no millionaire, plus my husband misses Northern CA (he is originally from San Ramon, but that was many years ago.)

I don't even know what Northern CA is like? What makes it so different from Southern CA? the people? The atmosphere? What? Why do people say it is like two different states?

Also, to all of the horse people out there, is Brentwood the only city in "The Bay Area" that is modestly priced for horse property? (although I know it is not truly the bay area, my husband wants to be close to San Jose because he is a software engineer.)

Can 350K buy me at least an acre anywhere other than Brentwood for horses somewhat near San Jose (within an hour and a half)? If not, what is Brentwood like? I have found a few properties there under $350K. Is it literally suburbia in one area, farmland on the other?

Would the commute from Brentwood to somewhere like Dublin, etc be insane?

Please fill me in here, I need help, *especially* on the "What is Brentwood like?* subject. We plan on visiting, but getting other peoples feedback really does help. Thanks in advance!

I'm a horse person but I live north of Sacramento. You might want to post your question on Bay Area Equestrian Network. Many of their posters live in the areas you would be interested in and most likely would be very helpful. I'm not sure whether I can post a link, but if you Google that name, you'll get there. Good luck with your move, wherever it takes you!

Horrible commute to the south bay or Silicon Valley. Around 90-120 minutes each way. Lots of traffic and bottlenecks.

When we lived in the bay area we went to Brentwood often for fresh produce. Since then, we have a friend living there
and there were many new home developments put in that suffered a great value loss second only to Stockton. You can pick up a really good deal on a home but that commute would be horrible. The schools are not great either, if you have kids.

To Dublin the time in the middle of the night is about 45 minutes, double that at commute times. To San Jose 90 minutes with no traffic and at commute times take a meal along.

Since you're from AZ I'll use an analogy that might help you. Its like comparing Phoenix to Flagstaff. That's why people say its like two different states.

You might also consider Prunedale in Monterey County. There are lots of affordable horse properties there, and the commute on 101 to San Jose is not nearly as bad as 680 over the Sunol Grade.

I don't even think it's that different. The Bay Area has area's that are very similar to LA. San Jose, Walnut Creek etc could be places in LA. The far east bay reminds me of O.C.
