Making a day trip down Highway 1 to Big Sur from San Francisco...

Been a while since I've done this. I realize it's 150 miles down by way of Highway 1, and easily a 3 hour drive if you do it right -- the scenic route, if you will, stopping to smell the roses.

But would like to find a quicker way to jet back to the city when the sun goes down and make quick time about it. Anyone know of a faster way back that Big Sur >> Santa Cruz via Hiway 1 >> San Jose via Hiway 17 >> SF via the 101?

Yup, that's right. That route is apx, 2 hours to Oakland, so I bet the trip to SF is very similar.

Could take 101 up from around Salinas and avoid 17 altogether.
