Good afternoon!
We're in the process of relocating from Seattle to the Bay Area, and are currently in search of a home to rent in the East Bay. We've flown down and spent days (upon days) driving through the neighborhoods, checking out the schools, etc.
We've decided Clayton is as far north (and east) as we'll look, Orinda is the farthest west, and Pleasanton is the farthest South.
My husband will be travelling up and down 680 for work, and I believe the central office is in the Pleasanton area.
One thing we can't seem to get an accurate grip on is the commute times. Naturally the real estate agents will tell us everything is wonderful. (No matter where we are or where we're going)
We've been fortunate in that most of our driving has been during off times, so we haven't run into the nightmare traffic we've heard about.
So what is the reality of average drive times during the peak hours - from Clayton to 680? From Orinda to Pleasanton? From Walnut Creek to Pleasanton?

Most Clayton residents drive westbound on Ygnacio Valley Road or Treat Blvd. through Concord & Walnut Creek to get to the 680 onramp headed South. I'd say it takes around 20 minutes on a good day & 30 - 45 minutes during rush hour morning traffic to travel from Clayton to the 680 onramp via Ygnacio Valley Road.

Check online for traffic reports (you can even do hypothetical times). Walnut Creek to Pleasanton isn't too bad in the afternoon (but Pleasanton to W/C can have some congestion).
