$75,000 would be decent for a single guy. For a family of 4 you may need to live some place like Vallejo, or West Oakland (high crime areas with poor schools, and much less desirable).

Take the job. You dont have to live in expensive-as-hell Burlingame..there are plenty of great, vibrant areas that dont cost that much and give you an easier commute. Look along BART lines.

What's your rental budget? Look in the East Bay along a BART line. Either the inner East Bay like Berkeley or Oakland or places like Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, or Concord.

I can make it in the bay area on 75k a year, though not in burlingame. Like mentioned above look to move somewhere near a bart line and take the train into the city. Castro Valley and parts of Hayward, San Leandro and San Lorenzo would work out well for you. On the peninsula you are paying for schools (which you don't need) and ease of access to the SV which you also don't need.
