I own a home in Moraga and was out there over the weekend. I went shopping in Walnut Creek. Beutiful new Neiman Marcus there and I saw a lot of Asians. Reminds me of Palo Alto now. Went over to Concord and noticed it's changed since when I first went there back in the late 90s. A lot of Blacks and Latinos. I knew it always had a decent size latino population but was pretty shocked to see how many Blacks have no moved there. I guess being squeezed out of places like SF/Oak/Berk put them there. Not to mention it's safer than Oakland and they don't need to go all the way to Pittsburgh & Antioch which are now dumps.gl

Yea, I think I would prefer to live in Walnut Creek. From what I've read it has a nice downtown area. I remember shopping around there 5-6 years ago and it was very nice from what I could remember.

I'll do a little more research to see if its ideal to work in concord.

Also, I've seen a lot of large business buildings near downtown. Swift Plaza (with 4 large buildings about 1million square feet and One Concord Center.) For the majority of people working in these buildings would you expect them to be living in concord or commuting from another city. I see that bart is just around the corner from these buildings. So, not sure how much they would contribute to the downtown economy if they just go straight to work and straight home.

I lived in Concord for about 6 months, and worked there for years.

I was completely miserable and moved back to Oakland as quickly as I could. Even though I hated the commute on 24, I was much happier back in Oakland.

It's not for everyone- especially if you're young and single. If you're raising a family, I think it's a completely different story, as it's pretty affordable and relatively close to SF.

Walnut Creek isn't great imo either, but if you like shopping, chain restaurants, and new money it might be right for you. People either seem to love it or hate it, so I guess it's all a matter of taste/opinion.

Dude what can you do In Oakland that is so different? Oakland is like a 20 minute car ride not to mention it's safer in Concord than Oakland ever will be.

Is this a serious question or a troll post?

Oakland and Concord are absolutely nothing alike.

How about live in a walkable neighborhood? Rely on public transit and not your car?

Go hiking in a redwood forest? Take a ferry across the bay to San Francisco? Go for a run around Lake Merritt? Eat at a Michelin rated restaurant? Go to a show at the Fox Theater? Attend Art Murmur? Go to Chabot Space & Science center? Attend a professional Football, Baseball, and basketball game?

This is the original post:

How would you describe [Concord and Walnut Creek], especially to somebody who is from the North Bay (me)? Santa Rosa specifically.

Expensive to live? I'm assuming WC is, but is Concord an expensive city to live in? I'm a young adult, so maybe I could look into a place like Concord for job opportunities. Not to mention it has BART, unlike here, so I might not even need a car to live there.

Nice scenery, plenty of thing to do? I heard Walnut Creek has a nice night life and the downtown is always vibrant and fun. Are there lots of nice malls or restaurants or places to hang out at? Any good hiking spots in the area? Or are Walnut Creek and Concord typical "bland suburban" places?

Asian food and community? I'd like to know whether or not Concord and Walnut Creek have a lot of good Asian restaurants, especially authentic ones, and is the Asian (East Asian, such as Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese) community there a decent size? Just curious because I am half Chinese. I knew a few people who lived there and said there is not a very large Asian community so there are not many authentic Chinese restaurants and not a lot of Asian supermarkets. A lot of Mexican supermarkets there I've heard, so that's good to know.[/quote]

The questions are about Concord and Walnut Beach. Please hold your comments to the areas mentioned.

Why not take BART? I'm not familiar with the bart system. I figured it would be a good form of transportation if I decided to live in Walnut creek or pleasanton to be able to make it out to SF or oakland. The train/subway system in washington DC is what I really enjoyed to get from place to place and I hope BART is similar.

I'm getting closer and closer to buying a medical office from a retiring Doc in Concord. I hope it's not a bad idea to work there and earn a living.

I'll have a lot of options to choose from to live in neighboring cities but I need to earn a stable income for my family.

BART is a commuter train. It's no good for nights out in SF on the weekends since it stops running around midnight. During rush hour, it runs about every 5-7 mins, but after 7PM and on weekends it's closer to 20 mins between each train.

DC's metro blows BART away. I grew up in the NOVA area and when I'm home visiting family, it's a great way to get into the city. BART is great for stuff like baseball games and concerts that end early, but the OP will be cabbing it otherwise.

Getting to work in SF it's pretty good though. I take it on T/TH when I teach, and it's great bypassing bridge traffic and it's a bit cheaper than gas/toll.
