And I assume you mean Washington Elementary in San Leandro.

As for the 23rd and Foothill area, IMO it and the entire Eastlake area are on the cusp of very significant gentrification... some of it is spilling over from Jingletown. The runaway success of Taqueria Sinaloa has been a contributing factor in increasing the visibility of the area to outsiders, as has the success of nearby Fruitvale Village and the increasing interest in the SE Asian offerings on International between 1st and 14th. I'd be very, very surprised if 10 years from now the area between 1st and 35th doesn't become heavily yuppified.
No, this school was in North Oakland off Shattuck, and a quick search tells me it's now known as Sankofa Academy.

If THAT happens I might have to consider moving back! LOL!!!!

Similar gentrification is going on here in Houston, which is every bit as "rough" as Oakland in spots. The new Major League Soccer stadium here was built in a former industrial warehouse area just east of downtown, which is also seeing some new condo development. There are still a lot of homeless people in the area as a couple of major homeless shelters and a couple of the major soup kitchens have been in the area for 30 years. I have a feeling they might not be there 10 years from now.
