Seeking driving route from Boston MA to San Francisco (safest, moving)

I am seeking the safest route from Boston MA to San Francisco CA in January 2008, I am not interested in sight seeing, but time is important to my trip as I would like to make it there in at least 4 days.

Safety is my #1 concern here and I have never made this trip, does anyone have any suggestions?

Interstate 80 is at least 2 lanes in both directions all the way, is heavily traveled with lots of gas/food/help along the way.

And Interstate 80 is a straight shot from NY to SF. No matter where you are, so long as you stay of 80 WEST, eventually it will lead to San Francisco.

Looking at Googe maps, you would take 90 all the way to Cleveland and there, 80 and 90 merge into one interstate and then they separate in Chicago.

Sounds easy. You'll have a blast. I did that drive in 1992(except we went from SF to NY)

Although in January, you might snow and ice in the rockies and then The Sierra Nevada.

Bring snow chains with you especially when crossing the Sierra Nevada Mtns,

If you are pulling a trailer be prepared for strong winds in Wyoming and Nebraska.

You would avoid most/all snow if you shot down the east coast to Interstate 40 and took that across, but it will add time. I did a Nashville to SF trip on that route once and it was pushing it to make it in three days. And one problem with that route is that if there is snow the highway departments are less capable in dealing with it because it is so infrequent. There is a lot more snow moving equipment further north.
