I live in San Jose, and would like to take an out of town friend in to SF for lunch and to do some shopping. I've only ever gone and done the tourist stuff, and I don't want to shop at Macy's or Bloomingdales.....any advice as to where to go that has lots of fun shops like you'd find in the Canal Street area of NY? Thanks in advance!

Everything is smaller here, so there is no single street like Canal. Instead you have several options, which you can combine. I'd say Union/Chestnut/Fillmore is a good combination, unfortunately, not all shopping areas are next to each other, but it's a fairly easy walk from Union to Chestnut. Another one would be Valencia in the Mission with lots of other options nearby. Other choices are in various neighborhoods throughout the city - Haight St, 24th St (Noe Valley), Hayes (Hayes Valley), Irving (Inner Sunset) and several more.

Actually the San Jose Flea Market on Berryessa near you is actually closer to Canal Street in NYC as far as merchandise..not kidding.

The areas within the city that kind of have that are Chinatown and Mission St.

At least that's my experience.
