If you and your friends can EACH afford at least $600 a month in rent then you could probably live as roommates in an apartment in Berkeley or Oakland. Go on craigslist and see what you find.

If you are going to sfsu, get a job close by. Min wage in sf is $10.24/hr, which should help with your expenses a lot. (Nearby cities are $8/hr or so). Retail or food service jobs are common and should be easily obtainable for college students.

I'd suggest living close to sf rather than okl, because of commute times / cost of transportation. Bart will set you back ~10/day, so if you have school 5 days a week, it'll cut into your budget quite a bit.

Areas close to sfsu like sunset, lakeshore, outer sunset might be good options. SROs might be cheaper than houses, and there's usually high rental turnover as semesters begin and end, so you should be able to find something. If you find something close by, biking will save you a bit on costs.

Tetkagrunya also posted some good advice above.
