Hello!

I'm visiting from NY/NJ and I'd like to figure out if SF is the right place to relocate to (I'm in IT so I assume I have the choice). NYC itself is too hectic for me (I lived for a year in Manhattan), but living in NJ and working in NYC is a good balance right now - some energy of the City, some NJ quietness (except for the last week) to relax and get my senses back.

I'm now in SF for the first time, and it seems too serene and calm around Fisherman's Wharf, where I'm staying - I like it here as a vacation destination, but I doubt I'll be able to work productively here - the weather is too nice, the people are too relaxed, etc.

So the question - where should I go over the next couple of days to get some of the more energetic vibe of SF, if it exists? I don't know, for example, a busy cafe during a lunch time, or a street corner during the rush hour, etc. Something related to the creative juices that flow here...

Maybe check out the Mission on a weekend? Especially Dolores Park and Valencia Street.

You're going to have to learn to deal with relaxed people and good weather, though. That's why most people are here!

Union Square - have lunch at the cafe Emporio Rulli within Union Square park. Lots of energy in the Union Square area.

Also try the Metreon.

Mission District is a pretty vibrant area- stick to Valencia Street there. It is still a pretty gritty area as it is still gentrifying. It is kind of like East Village.

That smoke always leads to those relaxed people he doesn't like, though.

Local Energy? The first thought that came to mind was the Chevron refinery in Richmond. lol

North Beach is generally a bit more energetic...maybe sit and enjoy a coffee at one of the sidewalk Cafe's along Columbus (Caffe Grecco, for instance). Stockton street in Chinatown is always bustling (so much so that it can be difficult to walk down the sidewalk) but its not really a place to "hang out". Its fun to see though. Haight Street has a lot going on too.

Good that you will visit Union Square.

Also, since you work in IT, SoMa (South of Market) is where the tech scene is at. Take a walk south down 2nd street from Market St. towards the ballpark on a weekday. Swing by the Metreon while you are at it. But stay east of 4th street because anything west of it is nearing Skid Row.

SF is not yet a completely gentrified, built out city like Manhattan/NYC. Its metro area is smaller too. The city is currently changing, hence all the construction and cranes everywhere. But SF will never be as energetic as NYC. It has its own character.
