The article from the OP was a very insightful and important analysis of Oakland's challenges. The quality of the discussion inspired by it was pretty dismal, OTOH.

Well isn't that $10 beer helping provide jobs and wages to Oakland's working class?

If it wasn't for all these dining and entertainment options to spend money on Oakland would be worse off. It's just really sick how some of you complain about people enjoying all these amenities that help create jobs in the city yet harp on it's socioeconomic issues. Or SOME users on here getting some sick joy in Oakland's pro sports teams wanting to leave the city and taking jobs with them.

Basically suggesting people shouldn't be out spending money on food, drinks, entertainment, etc.. but instead should be at home drafting plans to turn Oakland around. If you really care about Oakland turning around so much then go spend some money in it mod cut or be quiet.

Yes, Oakland is already striving to do this, but so are all of Oakland's neighbors. LOL

Furthermore, Downtown Oakland has very few retail and low skilled jobs because most of the jobs there are highly skilled, professional or government jobs--which for the most part shuts out the demographic of town that is most in need of meaningful employment.

We need blue collar/manufacturing/retail jobs in the flatlands. What Mayor Quan is doing to accomplish that remains to be seen, but I am willing to give her a pass to an extent because we are coming out of a very bad recession which hurt the poor the most.

On the other hand, unemployment is down in Oakland, falling 2% in 1 year from 15% to 13% which is still too high, but honestly much less than I would have thought.

This would increase city revenue and create jobs. More jobs would help lower the crime rate and more revenue would allow the city to boost its police force. A bigger police force won't do much if it doesn't have teeth, so I recommended a temporary stop and frisk law.
Yes, I have a generally negative view of OPD based on my personal experiences with them, but its not their fault that we find ourselves in this crime mess imo. We need to look in the mirror because our community belongs to us, not the police.

I feel like wringing the necks of some people I know because of their indifferent attitude towards the behavior of their kin.

Once the crime rate drops, Oakland will attract more families instead of hipsters and it could become a great city or if you already think it's great, and even greater city.
Apart from Downtown, Oakland appears to be attracting families of all races except for Blacks, who are leaving the city in alarming numbers. Their numbers dragged down the entire growth rate for the last decade, otherwise we saw brisk growth in most other groups.

Oakland 2000-2010
Entire City:
-1.9%

Some other Race +58.3%
Native Hawaiian/Pac. Islander +39.0%
Two or More Races +14.0%
Hispanic +11.4%
Non Hispanic White +11.0%
Asian +10.2%
American Indian +2.1%
Black -36.8% Staggering.

Somehow I don't think buying $10 beers helps the poverty and crime problem.

So you don't think jobs and wages for Oakland residents helps the city at all? Really? Would it be better if people didn't go out and dine in Oakland or spend money in the city?

What really sticks in my craw is how people who DONT EVEN LIVE HERE think they have the right/expertise to tell those of us THAT ACTUALLY LIVE HERE that we should be miserable instead of enjoying the nice things we have. Life in Oakland isn't a binary existence between being 100% prosperous and 100% destitute, despite the fact that some people view life in those extremes.

It's like telling a cancer patient at a birthday party to stop smiling since they are sick and should be worrying about their health instead. Who does that?

Just ridiculous.

Clubs and drinking beer don't really solve the problem. It helps the club owners quite a bit. If those club owners choose to help people with their money, then sure it can help, but that's not an assumption we can make.

Who ever said that Uptown's dining and nightlife scene was preventing crime in Oakland or that it's an industry goal is to solve Oakland's many problems?

All that's been said is that Oaklanders (and anyone who wants to come to Oakland) have a right to spend their money on the same things that other people spend their money on in other cities. It doesn't make us bad people.

Look, if you want to tackle Oakland's crime problem, run for office or something. But if you're going to criticize people for essentially doing nothing to help the problem (or in your words enjoying $8 beer happy hours in Uptown), without doing anything yourself other than pointing out the obvious fact that Oakland has violent crime, you're just as guilty for being a bystander.

How is Oakland different from any other large city in this regard? You continue to unknowingly expose your anti-Oakland bias through a pattern of double standards when it comes even the most menial issues like people eating out. Its beyond transparent.

Also, your response doesnt really address the question posed by sav858, which was:
Would it be better if people didn't go out and dine in Oakland or spend money in the city?
