Due to that pesky crack in the land that's a mere 10 miles away, I've put in a decent supply of canned black beans, rice, coffee, water and fuel to heat water. Both the dog and I can live on beans and rice for awhile.

I also have a 12ga Mossberg and plenty of rounds on hand, lest someone who didn't prepare decides to relieve me of my supplies.

A moonshine still will be a handy item for when the apocalypse comes.

Perhaps you overlooked packing shiny beads and shells to barter with? I always keep a 50 lb sack of salt and some extra furs handy just in case myself.

I tell you, waterproof the bottom of a tank, and you are set. It'll be monsoon and tsunami proof. I'm starting to sound like you nutjobs lol

Default Earthquake/Disaster Prepping

Zombies and tanks aside, I've been gathering prep supplies over the last couple years in case of a major earthquake. I'm from the East Coast and the biggest difference between a natural disaster there and here (IMO) is knowing it's coming. Any blizzards and hurricanes I've dealt with I'd known at least a day if not more in advance and could make a last minute shopping trip to prepare for no power, etc. Earthquakes don't afford that luxury.

I've got canned food, dry goods and a case of bottled water. A "water bob" which is a 50 gallon tank that fits in your bathtub. Hand crank radio/weather radio/flashlight/usb charger. Candles and battery flashlights. Charger converter for our car from "lighter" electricity to "regular household plugs" electricity (I know, I'm not an electrician, I just know how to use it!). A bug-out bag prepped to go. And a small kit in my car (for when I'm at work or elsewhere in my car and emergency strikes). And like a PP, I try to keep at least a half tank in my car, as I commute from East Bay to Peninsula for work and fully expect if something happened while I was at work, I'd have to drive home via San Jose.

In my community the city offers disaster prep classes... basically to train folks with how to respond in a disaster and organize their neighborhoods. It's really a brilliant set of courses that can be helpful in any circumstance, not just an earthquake.

Think about Katrina or Sandy, what happened to all those people - looting, breaking into houses, taking away peoples food/water, etc.
Move out of California and buy beachfront property in AZ or Nevada.

I wonder if the problem with surviving any catastrophe isn't being prepared as much as being prepared for what will happen. Underground bunkers loaded with supplies aren't much good if an earthquake splits it open, or damages the structure so to make it unsafe. One can stock up on everything and be prepared for the long haul, but, if, say it is a catastrophe that causes a "nuclear winter" where the plant life dies out, then food, and/or vitamin defficiency, along with the possibility of a drastic weather shift becomes an issue. That would be the scenario if it were an asteroid, or volcanic ash thrown into the atmosphere, but the situation would change if it really is an after-effect of some form of nuclear catastrophe. Then people would have to deal with radiation fall-out, and the lingering effects of the radiation on the body. Water supplies could also become contaminated, as well as food sources. Medical supplies would probably be used up quickly, as well as any resource that could be initiated against the radiation. Since I've been a kid, science fiction movies have always interested me, especially the ones about end-of-the-world scenarios. Probably, if nothing else, just to see the resourcefulness of people when they are up against the odds, and wonder if I would have what it takes to survive a holocaust?

Guns and lots of ammo are a good idea. I don't have special prepping supplies but I always carry a lot of camping emergency stuff in my car, like fuel, axe, matches, water treatment, knives, flashlights, grain, camp stove, camping mug, tent, sleeping bags, propane, arctic gear, etc... I had recently came back from OR wilderness where a guy from SF died due to being stuck in the mountains with lack of supplies...he didn't think he was going to be on a backcountry road, it was meant to be an easy 2-hour drive. They were terrified at hungry animals lingering around them while they were stuck...with nothing to shoot them with too.
