I'll be graduating college soon, I'm in my Senior year and I studied computer science.
I really wanna move to San Francisco, I have more than enough money saved up to find a place and finding a job will not be a problem. What I wanna know is, is it possible to get by without a car? I don't drive and I don't plan to. How nice is the city overall compared to cities of a larger size? It's either SF or NYC, and I'll have much more trouble finding a job there. Thanks in advance.

You can live without a car in SF. But if you work in Silicon Valley or San Mateo County where a lot of tech jobs are, you may want to get a car if your office isn't near Caltrain and doesn't have a corporate shuttle.

^^ Pretty much what mayor said.

You don't need a car if you live in San Francisco. You might need a car if you work in SV. However, many companies offer shuttle service from San Francisco or you could take Caltrain if you live near a station. The work environment in the Bay Area for computer science is probably better than NYC too.

Caltrain's stations within SF are all in very inconvenient locations though, which is part of the reason the corporate shuttles are becoming so popular--they pick up people in places where tech kids actually want to live, like Noe Valley or Hayes Valley or around Dolores Park, and they take you straight to work.

I'd consider NYC seriously as the tech scene there is very active too. I started my business in NYC and a lot of it had to do with how easy it is to meet and socialize with people in tech there. Here it's really spread out. That doesn't make it bad but it makes it harder to get around and network if you don't have a car. Of course, there are companies like ZipCar and City Car Share that let you rent for a few hours at a time, but it's still easier in NYC because most of the action is happening at a few spots in Brooklyn or Manhattan. If you're not going to consider driving at all, I'd say NYC.

Both are fine. I have friends that work for some of the SV tech companies and they hop on the buses that take them to work. There are freelancers here too that mostly work from home.
