Sounds like a certain "Doc" has returned to regurgitate Oakland crime blather. Joy.

The bay is very beautiful and there are more career opportunities but the cost of living is significantly higher as well. It can get very windy if you live in Berkeley or San Francisco. There is a solid array of dining choices as well. For me the crime, cold winters, and cost of living made me move to Santa Barbara.
Yep, no crime in Eastside SB. /sarc

However, if you do want to make the move, you've got BART in the East Bay and Caltrain on the Peninsula for public transportation into SF.
Parts of Santa Barbara may be less expensive than one of the most expensive parts of the bay area, but on the whole, I think living in Santa Barbara is more expensive - the result is that many people wind up commuting in from Lompoc/Buelton and Ventura - which are not short drives.

So, it's actually quite expensive, but people make less money.

However, I ultimately agree that living in Santa Barbara is better than the bay area - even if it means you don't make as much money, or can't afford as nice of things.
