This happens a lot here. The defense against Oakland's crime problems is always to point out another city's crime problem.

Yep, they will compare the worst district in SF to the best in Oakland and say seeeeeee Oakland's crime is the same if not better. Facts Smacks! lol

Ok. Oakland has some really nice areas. Now you're going to ignore that.

You started it by glossing over the crappy parts of SF, anyway, and insisting that the only thing worth knowing about Oakland is its murder rate. Pretty common and ignorant attitude, lots of people in the Bay Area hold it.

I'm trying to have a reasonable discussion on why a San Francisco can be so close to Oakland yet Oakland be so much more violent. Why don't they work together to get idea's on how to lower Oaklands out of control crime rates?
Because all of the poor people in SF, unless they are homeless or live in the projects, have been priced out of the city. Oakland still has large areas of poor and working-class people.
As for your reasonable discussion, threads on Oakland and crime are started at least once a week on this forum, usually by usernames who make it their first post. So perhaps you can leaf through the back pages to find your answer.

I'd also like to add, Oakland is majority lower income and run down. SF has tiny pockets you have to go out of your way to get to. Oakland has huge large flat area's of impoverished crime filled area's. With pockets of decent ones, it's the opposite of SF in that regard.
You obviously have never been to Hunter's Point. Sometimes 50% of the entire city's murder count occurs in HP. Places like HP have comparable crime rates and qualities of life that mirror some of the worst ghetto towns in the U.S. like Chester, PA. Also, SF has some of the most run-down projects in America. Most of Oakland's projects have been renovated. And I wouldn't say SF has tiny pockets that are out of the way. Pretty much the entire southern half of SF is a big continuous chunk of lower middle class to working class hoods that are block by block in terms of ghettoness, sketchiness and safety from Lakeview to Visitacion Valley to the southern fringes of the Mission to Bernal Heights to the Tenderloin/SOMA to Potrero Hill to Hunter's Point. All of East Oakland is not that bad either. Some of the real hoods in East Oakland are places like the Dubs and Sobrante Park.

Also, Oakland is only about half the size of SF. These proportions are important to remember. Those "tiny" ghetto pockets of SF are actually just as large as the real dangerous hoods in East and West Oakland. For example, the Ingleside Heights sub-neighborhood of SF's "Lakeview" and Oakland's Rancho San Antonio District a.k.a. the "Murder Dubs" are both about 6,000 people a piece. And trust me, the two places on both sides of the bridge have always been in the same category crime-wise. In actuality, Lakeview is much larger because Lakeview is a catch-all local term for Oceanview-Merced-Ingleside which is an extra 6,000+ people:

when crime is not confronted when it is condoned or excused it gets worse not better.

True, but rehashing the same talking points daily on message boards do not make things better either. Perhaps you all can funnel your internet outrage into action, such as vocally supporting Larry Reid's new crime-fighting proposal to the city council, and demanding the council and mayor adopt it.
Oakland plan would add police personnel - SFGate

the opinion of non resident outsiders like me does not count. when the people of the community think there is something wrong it will get better and not before.
