It lowers a lot of things; crime rate, median income, income inequality, etc. The larger populations get, the more they skew towards the median/norm, smoothing out spikes and outliers.

Im sure it will warm the hearts of Oakland's good friends from out of town to learn that homicides in Oakland are down 24% from last year.

It is good news, but with Oakland, I'm always hesitant to proclaim that things are changing. One thing is for sure, bringing in a former Los Angeles PD chief is working, and he's had a positive effect on the city's crime. So in a way, Oakland can thank Los Angeles PD for the reduction in crime.

One thing is for sure, it's way too early to say things are going to be good long term. Homicides dipped from 2007 to 2010 at one point, and then started spiking to 10 year highs in 2010-2012.

That's how it's always been with Oakland, some years down, some years up, but always violent regardless. Even when Oakland had an abnormally low 60 homicides in 1999, which was the first time in a long while that Oakland actually had LESS murders than S.F, Oakland's homicide RATE was still double that of S.F.

The long standing problems still exist; lack of police force, profitable drug trade, gangs still roaming the city. Lots of homeless and poverty, unusually high drop out rate, lots of former convicts and parolees being dumped into the city, etc. Until these LONG term problems are solved, Oakland will continue to experience high crime.

We're only 3 months into the year, the numbers are dropping which is good, but let's wait until the year is further in before we get warm feelings about progress.

Yes, it really is.

Honestly it seems things have calmed down. Im hoping that Bratton will do in Oakland what he did in New York.

lol, you mean being FORCED TO RESIGN for taking corporate handouts and perks while writing a tell all book about reforms that GIULIANI created, and not Bratton? Do you even know Bratton's history in NYC? Why do you think he came to L.A?

He came to L.A and recreated himself and actually proved he could reduce crime out of Giuliani's shadow, which of course he is using to help OAKLAND. LAPD tactics are having a good effect in helping the city of Oakland. Oakland owes a debt of gratitude to Los Angeles PD.
