I commute from Union city to novato,ca and as you guys know is a crazy commute. I recently found a person who lives in Newark,ca willing to carpool with me. That persons work place is in San Rafael,ca. We are toying up with different ideas to make this workable. That persons house is 3 miles away from mine and workplace is ~ 10 miles before mine. (we go past his workplace to get to mine). some of the ideas are:

1. I drive from my house to pick him up and drop him at his workplace and go to mine and he does the same on alternate days.
2. we both drive in different cars on the first day and while returning park his car in his office parking lot and drive back in my car. The next day I pick him up and when returning park my car in his office parking lot . This saves the additional ~10 miles that he has to drive from his office to mine .
3.we find a parking lot in berkeley suitable for overnight parking . he drives his car and parks his car in the morning and take my car and go to work.returning back, I park my car overnight and come back home in his car.any suggestions for a safe parking lot near 580 or El Cerrito or Berkeley?

Suggestions or ideas welcome from carpool veterans or people with awesome analytical thinking

One idea would be for you to drive all the time, and he chips in money to pay for gas. It seems like that would be the most cost-effective solution for both of you.

Thanks sonarrat for the reply. More than the money, I don't want to be driving ~100miles RT everyday

so trade weeks - you drive 1 or 2 weeks, then he drives 1 or 2 weeks.
